How to Choose Low Voltage Landscape Lighting
Most landscape lighting jobs fail for the same three reasons: the wrong beam spread, an undersized transformer, and wire that's too thin for the run. Get those right and a brass system will run for twenty years with nothing but lamp changes.
1. Pick the fixture by the job
Path lights wash walkways and bed edges. Spot lights (up-lights) graze tree trunks, columns and stone. Well lights do the same work flush with the grade where a visible fixture would be in the way. Flood lights wide-wash a facade or hedge. Deck and step lights handle stairs, rails and seat walls. Underwater fixtures light ponds, fountains and pool walls.
2. Match the beam spread
Narrow spot (15°) for tall palms and two-story facades. Medium flood (35-40°) for ordinary trees and shrub masses. Wide flood (60°) for walls and wide canopies. Use 2700K warm white on brass, stone and stucco — anything cooler makes planting look grey and reads as commercial.
3. Size power and wire together
Total your fixture wattage, add 25% headroom, then pick the transformer. Use a multi-tap unit so you can compensate for voltage drop on the far end of a run. Split long runs into separate home runs rather than daisy-chaining everything onto one cable.

Installation notes
- Mount the transformer at least 12 inches above grade on a GFCI outlet.
- Bury 12/2 or 10/2 direct-burial cable six inches deep, clear of trenching lines.
- Use silicone-filled waterproof connectors — never wire nuts or tape.
- Leave a service loop of cable at each fixture so it can be repositioned.
- Aim and test at night, then set the photocell or astronomic timer.

- Rinse lenses each season; hard-water film cuts output more than any lamp fade.
- Let brass patina naturally — sealing or polishing shortens fixture life.

- What size transformer do I need for my landscape lighting?
- Add up the wattage of every fixture on the run and size the transformer at roughly 1.25x that total, so a 200W load wants a 300W transformer. The extra headroom keeps the unit cool and leaves room to add fixtures later. With LED fixtures at 3-9W each, a 300W multi-tap transformer comfortably runs 25-40 lights.
- What gauge wire should I use for low voltage landscape lights?
- 12/2 direct-burial cable handles most residential runs up to about 100 feet. Go to 10/2 for runs past 100 feet or loads above 150W on a single home run. Undersized wire is the number one cause of dim fixtures at the end of a run — voltage drop, not a bad lamp.
- How far apart should path lights be spaced?
- Eight to ten feet apart for a soft, continuous wash along a walkway. Tighter than six feet reads as runway lighting; wider than twelve leaves dark gaps. Stagger them side to side rather than lining both edges of the path.
- Is solid brass worth it over aluminum or composite fixtures?
- Yes, in any climate with irrigation, salt air or freeze cycles. Cast brass develops a protective patina and keeps working for decades, while painted aluminum pits and eventually perforates at the seams. Brass fixtures typically outlast three or four rounds of aluminum replacements.
- Can I install low voltage landscape lighting myself?
- Yes. Low voltage systems run at 12V, so no electrical license is required for the fixture side — you only need a GFCI outdoor outlet for the transformer. Bury cable six inches deep, use waterproof silicone-filled connectors, and set the timer or photocell after everything tests good.
